Explore The Reef from Your Great Barrier Reef island accommodation

Daydream Island is the perfect Great Barrier Reef island accommodation from which to explore Australia’s famous Great Barrier Reef.

Whether you’re a non-swimmer or keen to get wet, there are many ways you can interact with the planet’s largest living organism.

Using the pick of Whitsundays resorts Daydream Island as your stepping stone, right in the heart of The Whitsundays, here are three ways to enjoy a Reef experience you’ll never forget.

Daydream’s Living Reef on your Great Barrier Reef Island accommodation

Immerse yourself in one of Australia’s most unique experiences as you make unforgettable connections with the amazing animals of the Living Reef.

The freeform coral lagoons course through the resort and are a major attraction at Daydream containing an astounding variety of marine life.

Holding more than 1.5 million litres of water, it is one of the world’s largest man-made, living coral reef lagoons, creating a home for more than 140 species of marine fish, 80 species of coral and 15 species of invertebrates such as starfish, sea cucumbers and crabs.

Guided Fish Feeding
Join Daydream’s marine biologists for some close contact with the Living Reef’s marine attractions. Hand feed the majestic rays, Pikelet and Puppy, pat a friendly shark, hold a sea star in your hand.

Stingray Splash
Walk knee-deep into the Living Reef, within a group of up to four people, for Stingray Splash — an extraordinary adventure hand-feeding and patting the rays. You’ll also learn about the intriguing idiosyncrasies of the beautiful tropical fish and invertebrates.

Living Reef Ranger
Delve a little deeper as a Ranger in the Living Reef Ranger program. Join the marine biologists for a Guided Fish Feed, Stingray Splash and exclusive shark encounters. You’ll also take part in the daily public fish and shark feeding shows and get behind-the-scenes access to the restricted areas, help prepare food for the marine animals, test water quality and perform other husbandry and biologist duties.

School Groups
Day trips and overnight packages are available for the coolest school excursion ever. Interacting with our marine biologists and Living Reef inhabitants is such a fun way to learn about and experience the magical marine world.

Night tours
Rendezvous after dark with our marine biologists to learn about the nocturnal behaviour of the Living Reef inhabitants. Under the stars, feed and touch Pikelet and Puppy our stingrays, pat a friendly shark, and hold a sea star.

Marine biologist for a day
This is an incredible opportunity to join in the fascinating daily duties of our marine biologists. This is real and unforgettable work experience, where you’ll be assisting our experts in water quality testing, animal husbandry, food preparation, life support system checks and animal health checks, as well as participating in the Guided Fish Feed, Stingray Splash and exclusive shark encounters.

Fringing Reef & Islands

Daydream is the only inhabited Whitsunday Island with fringing reef directly off the island. With just a short stroll from your room you can be amongst the most fascinating marine life in just a matter of minutes.

Daydream Fringing Reef
As you step off the beach at secluded Lovers Cove you’ll be amazed at the welcome from the schools of parrot fish right in front of you. Daydream’s fringing reef is regarded as one of the healthiest in the region and a haven for snorkelers.

Reef after Dark
Live weekly shows after dark at Lovers Cove show the fringing coral reef coming alive at night. Sit back in comfort as Daydream Island’s marine biologist team dive in and stream ‘live’ underwater footage to a screen during this unique educational experience.

Surrounding Islands
The Whitsundays consists of 74 islands and Daydream is the perfect base to explore this aquatic wonderland. In your very own hire boat you can discover places like Nara Inlet and Butterfly Bay off Hook Island, world famous Whitehaven Beach, or venture to North Molle or White Rock Island.

Whitehaven Beach
A must-see destination, Whitehaven Beach has become world famous because of its bright white silica sand and turquoise waters. It’s the perfect place for a romantic picnic lunch and an afternoon of snorkeling and swimming. There are three main tour operators that pick up from Daydream to visit Whitehaven.

Great Barrier Reef from Whitsundays Resorts

Here are three ways to access the 7th Natural Wonder of the World right from Daydream Island.

Cruise Whitsundays ‘Seaflight’
Journey by boat aboard Cruise Whitsundays ‘Seaflight’ through the Whitsunday Islands to the outer Great Barrier Reef where you will arrive at their pontoon at Hardy Reef. There you will have access to Queensland’s largest and most spectacular underwater viewing chamber and a giant waterslide.

A Helireef adventure gives you amazing access to the scenery of the Reef and Whitsunday Islands whether by boat or helicopter, plus a helicopter flight enables you to see The Whitsundays’ iconic Heart Reef.

Explore the underwater wonderland in the best possible way by scuba diving. You can have a beginner’s scuba dive added to your Great Barrier Reef trip with Cruise Whitsundays or for experienced divers, a certified dive.

With Daydream’s stunning tropical location the world famous Reef is accessible right from your Great Barrier Reef island accommodation. Whether you wish to stay dry or fancy exploring the reef using flippers there’s a reef experience to suit everyone at Daydream Island Resort & Spa.
