LIVING REEF ATTENDANT   JOB ID # 19

Award winning Daydream Island Resort and Spa currently has a very rare and exciting opportunity for a qualified person to join our Living Reef team.

 

The Living Reef facility comprises two separate outdoor lagoon systems with a total volume in excess of 1.5 million litres in the flow through systems.  It is believed to be the largest of its type in the southern hemisphere.  Both lagoons contain large sharks and stingrays, coral reef fish and large amounts of living coral.  This represents significant capital investment, including infrastructure that needs maintenance.  Livestock require correct food, health monitoring and fully functioning life support systems.

 

As the Living Reef Attendant your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting daily public feeding and education sessions including stingray interactive experience.

  • Cleaning and Maintaining lagoons and Life Support Systems (LSS).

  • Monitoring fish and coral health and reporting issues to the Living Reef Manager.

  • Water quality monitoring and recording in appropriate databases.



Essential Criteria:

  • Experience in the maintenance of marine aquaria including knowledge of coral and fish compatibility.

  • Experienced in public speaking and educating large groups.

  • Good presentation skills with the ability to present information to our visitors in a fun and interesting way

  • Lively and enthusiastic personality and personally well presented

  • Experience in identification of animal health issues and their treatment.

  • Experience with Life Support Systems & Water Quality monitoring

  • Excellent observation and record keeping skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Computer skills using MS Office

  • Excellent organisational and decision making skills

  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable including making the most of a challenging or unfamiliar environment, the ability to act with urgency and respond positively to situations.

  • Ability to problem solve, including understanding the issues, the cause of the issues and making sound decisions to ensure the issues are resolved.

  • Police Clearance and Working with Children Check 

  • Current Australian Drivers License.

  • Ability to work a flexible weekly schedule including weekends and public holidays.

  • Available for on-call emergencies.

  • Physical ability to lift and carry up to 25kg


This is a live onisland position offering shared accommodation and meals at a subsidized rate.
