Description: Why are reef fish so colourful? Why do Clownfish live with anemones? Why does coral need sunlight? All these questions and more will be answered in a hands-on, interactive experience where students will learn about marine diversity and important relationships between marine species.
Who eats who
Subjects: Coral reef ecosystems, food webs.
Description: This exciting module takes students on a journey from the very bottom of the food web, right through to the powerful apex predators. Students will learn all about marine ecology and food webs of a coral reef ecosystem while watching this natural process take place right in front of their eyes in the Living Reef lagoons.
Just one big fish tank
Subjects: Animal welfare, water quality, animal biology
Description: The knowledge students will gain from this package will enable them to set-up and care for their very own marine aquarium at home or in the classroom! Students will become marine biologists for a day and learn about water quality, filtration, environment enrichment and animal welfare for corals, echinoderms, fish and sharks in an aquarium environment.
Everyone plays a part
Subjects: Human impacts, environmental balances, global warming, coral biology
Description: The coral reef is a fragile ecosystem that can be adversely affected by the day-to-day activities of humans. This module will explain why these environmental impacts affect the reef so badly and what we as individuals, or together, can do to help save this precious environment. Students will conduct a coral case study, to identify coral bleaching, disease and warfare - the causes and what can be done to reverse those impacts.
Life cycles of the marine world
Subjects: Fish, shark and echinoderm biology, animal reproduction, survival strategies
Description: Marine animals use a wide variety of reproductive strategies to ensure the survival of their offspring in the ever-changing marine world. During this fun, interactive module, students will learn about the different strategies used by bamboo sharks and black-tip reef sharks compared with those of the damsel fish and sea stars. Students will witness many of these reproductive stages within the Living Reef lagoons.
